Firefighter, Emergency Services
Started in emergency services as a firefighter, where staying calm under pressure was part of the job.
Right of Way Driving School is a Chilliwack driving school licensed under the Motor Vehicle Act of British Columbia (DTC# 2918). Sergey Yablonovsky founded it and teaches every lesson himself: calm, one-on-one instruction on the Chilliwack roads students are tested on, from the first pickup to test day.
Sergey, the founder and lead instructor of Right of Way Driving School, came to driver training from emergency services, where he drove large vehicles and taught others to drive them.
Born in Eastern Europe, Sergey began his career in emergency services as a firefighter. He then trained and worked as a fire-truck driver. Later, he became an instructor for fire-truck and special-service vehicle drivers, teaching emergency personnel how to operate large vehicles safely.
After moving to Canada, Sergey continued working in safety-focused roles. He became a First Aid Medic and Emergency Response Vehicle driver and worked on industrial projects across British Columbia, operating a fully equipped first-aid response vehicle on remote and large-scale worksites, including projects connected to BC Hydro. That work built a habit of judging risk calmly, which is what he now teaches from the passenger seat.
Eventually, Sergey returned to what he had always enjoyed most: teaching driving. After becoming a licensed driving instructor in British Columbia, he founded Right of Way Driving School in Chilliwack. Today the school teaches Class 7 and Class 5 students the skills and judgment to pass the ICBC road test and to drive safely on their own afterwards.
His teaching style is calm and practical, built around the situations students actually meet on Chilliwack roads.

Every lesson is taught in a 2021 Toyota Corolla Hybrid equipped with dual steering wheels, instructor-side gas and brake, a head-up display, and surround-view cameras. That makes it a calmer car to learn in, especially for new or anxious drivers. Most other schools have only a brake pedal on the instructor side. With dual steering and instructor-side gas, the instructor can take over and finish the manoeuvre smoothly instead of simply stopping the car.
If you are choosing a driving school for your teen, here is what usually matters most. Right of Way is a licensed driver training school, lessons are taught by a licensed instructor, and training happens in a dual-control car: a second steering wheel plus instructor-side gas and brake, so the instructor can take over smoothly at any moment. Your teen also works with the same instructor every lesson, which keeps feedback consistent and progress moving instead of restarting each session.
Early lessons start on quiet residential streets, not busy roads. Skills are added one at a time (steering, smooth braking, observation, intersections), and each lesson ends with a short recap of what was covered and what comes next, so you are never guessing where things stand. Many families pair lessons with supervised practice at home; the lessons give your teen a structure that home practice can safely build on.
“I felt safer as a parent knowing that my son was receiving professional lessons to prepare him for his N and to be a safe driver on the road.”
A practical starting point: many parents book a single Core Session first, then move to a lesson package once their teen and the instructor have met. We never promise a guaranteed pass. What you get is structured training, honest feedback, and a safe car to learn in.
Each session has a clear objective, focused driving practice, honest feedback, and a plan for what to improve next. That holds whether you are starting from zero, rebuilding confidence after a failed test, or tidying up before a Class 5 exam.
